Located right on the scenic Paseo Marítimo el Pedregal in Málaga-Este, Restaurante El Morata offers an authentic and memorable taste of traditional Spanish coastal cuisine. This charming beachside restaurant is a beloved gem among locals and visitors seeking freshly grilled seafood paired with the gentle sea breeze and unbeatable views of the Mediterranean.
The culinary experience here centers around the region’s famed espetos — sardines expertly skewered and grilled live right on the beach. Patrons consistently praise how succulent and flavorful these morsels are, perfectly smoky without being overpowering. Beyond sardines, El Morata’s menu features a variety of other grilled delights such as tender octopus and calamaritos a la plancha, each dish bursting with freshness and vivid seaside flavors.
One can’t visit without trying their selection of fish cooked à la plancha, like the luscious lubina (sea bass) that elicits notes of the ocean with every bite. Complementing the seafood are classic Spanish sides like ensalada rusa — a comforting, creamy potato salad — and paella, which, though modestly adorned, offers generous portions and satisfying warmth. Guests in the know rave about the perfectly cooked coquinas, lightly garlicky clams that strike a harmonious balance ensuring you won’t feel thirsty afterward.
Dining at El Morata is truly a sensory delight: you’ll hear the crackling flames from the grills, smell the intoxicating aromas of fresh seafood mingling with sea salt, and savor every bite against the backdrop of tranquil waves and even spontaneous live street music, creating an inviting and joyful atmosphere. The attentive service, particularly from staff like Toni who provides warm and polished hospitality, elevates the experience to feeling like an exclusive seaside feast with friends.
Despite a minor hiccup with ordering bottled water, customers note how the friendly and efficient team quickly make up for it, ensuring the overall ambiance remains relaxing and pleasurable. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely lunch or a vibrant dinner, El Morata strikes a perfect harmony between authenticity, quality, and value.
For families, the restaurant offers plenty of choices catering to younger palates, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. Prices are reasonable considering the prime location and the exceptional freshness of the seafood, placing El Morata comfortably among the top seaside dining spots in Málaga.
In essence, Restaurante El Morata is more than just a meal — it is a joyful immersion into the heart of Málaga’s seaside culinary culture, where every dish tells a story of tradition, passion, and the vibrant coastal spirit.

Great food at great prices. All fish are grilled live in front of you We have tried so many Chiquititas across the coastline of Malaga, and this is definitely in the top three - staff are super and the food is exceptional. If you’re looking for traditional seaside Spanish food from locals, this is the place to go. And plenty of options for children as well.

Very nice traditional Spanish restaurant. All dishes were tasty, the view next to the sea is great. They grill the sardines on the beach and you get them fresh. Quick service and good prices. It's definitely worth going

The best lunch I have had on Pedregalejo beach. El Morata is a restaurant with a 5 view. The nicely ironed linen, par la duena, a clean and friendly atmosphere and an inviting welcome. Toni is attentive to every need, I felt like royalty. The espetos were delicious, not too salty and the coquinas were perfectly cooked with not too much garlic ( so you would not be thirsty for the rest of the day) .2 glasses of heavenly verdejo and a café solo to balance all of it. On the day of my last meal I hope to eat there and then go to heaven .

Service: Quick and friendly Food: Espeto de Sardina - really tasty Haddock- typical cod fish Ensalada rusa - the usual Paella - ok,not the best but ok. Portion in the pic is for 1 person and it's quite a lot. Could use a bit more seafood Calamaritos a la plancha- super tasty, they have this little calcium thingy. Not idea how it's called. You are not supposed to eat it but it is full of calcium and gives them a little crunch

Very good service and food. Had grilled octopus. It is a bit pricey but worth it. My husband had mini portions of fried squid and mini salad - those were rather good portions and affordable.
